I have two money trees. They are each in an eastern facing window. One has been thriving and one is just doing OK. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the one downstairs and today I noticed what looked like a fine yellow powder on top of the soil. Does anyone have any idea what that could be? I forgot to take pictures of the bad soil, but the attached picture is of my struggling and healthy money tree. One difference I’m pretty sure of is that the one that isn’t doing as well was in miracle-gro potting soil and the one that is thriving is in a chunky soil blend I get from my local nursery. I have seen Adrian say it but my experience also backs up that the miracle-gro soil is terrible. I repotted it and used the chunky soil blend today.

The lighter leaves are new growth, which is a good sign that the plant is healthy and thriving. For the soil, I recommend using the orange bag of Miracle-Gro specifically for cactus and succulent plants, with added perlite to ensure proper drainage and prevent the roots from sitting in wet soil too long.

Thank you! I have a really good chunky soil for succulents and cactus now from my local nursery. Unfortunately I had used the miracle gro potting soil with it because it was my first house plant that I repotted. They both do have a few new growths which is nice. The leaves on the one that isn’t doing as well keep getting brown spots and little tears in them and I don’t know why

I second the cactus mix; I mixed it with tropical and my money tree is so happy.

Check for pests just in case, but it might also be a sign of overwatering or poor air circulation. Try adding more perlite and watering it every 10 days. Depending their location, you will need to adjust your watering.
