Hello! 🪴🌱 I have been dealing with a recent thrips pest issue on my monstera plant :( This is all new to me to deal with and never had this issue before with my monstera. When I first noticed it, it was on 3-4 leaves very mild case, I did some research and bought myself a spray bottle and castille peppermint soap and went to cleaning the leaves, I let the soapy water solution sit on the leaves for about 1hr then started wiping the leaves… fast forward today After doing more research seemed like I did it wrong and didn’t leave the solution on the leaves and didn’t discard the paper towels I used to wipe after each leaf swipe and doing it once every 1or two week treatment. Today I noticed the thrips are in all the leaves now, my monstera looking sad, some leaves are turning yellow or brown, some leaves are loosing its vibrate green color 😩. I went ahead and bought neem oil plant spray and Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Killer Granules. I’m thinking of giving my monstera plant a thorough shower and changing the soil and treating it after with the pest treatments… any advice or tips I can do to help save my baby ? I’ll greatly appreciate it ❤️

Here’s how I successfully got rid of thrips on mine after lots of research: 1. Cover the pot/planter with saran wrap as much as possible (to prevent thrips from falling into the soil) 2. Spray plant off thoroughly with water to dislodge as many eggs and insects as possible 3. Dry the leaves off/wait for leaves to dry, then spray THOROUGHLY with insecticidal soap until it runs off. Like you want every square inch to be covered. Let dry. 4. Repeat 1x/week for 4 weeks to cover the entire lifecycle of thrips- otherwise you’ll have them come back.

I wouldn’t right now if it were me. It might stress the plant out more, and adult thrips lay eggs inside plant tissue, not in the soil. I sprayed the top layer of my soil with insecticidal soap as well which would probably be more than sufficient for you if you do everything else. I also forgot to mention that you can rinse the leaves off 12-24 hours later if you’re worried the plant is sensitive to the soap.
