I bought a rose painted Calathea from Costco a few weeks ago. Beautiful. It’s about 8 feet from a west window. I spray it twice a week and water when the top layer of dirt -about an inch or two dry. I have noticed spots are developing . The first picture of the plant looks good. The leaves shown are now developing spots. My second calathea and the first one died! Hoping to save.

Hello! I may be wrong but it could either be sun damage or fluoride the in water!

Spraying has the potential of introducing a fungal or bacterial problem. Since your watering seems right and there is also crisping around the edges, I would guess humidity issue or the aforementioned possibility. (Spraying/misting does not really increase humidity unless you’re doing it a million times a day).

There are several possible reasons for the damage. As Tina said, it could be the fluoride in the water. It is believed by many that they are sensitive to it. It is widely accepted that they are sensitive to certain minerals that are present in much of the tap water, especially lime. Distilled or RO water is recommended. Do not use bottled spring water. It contains minerals. Leaving water set out over night does not work, contrary to what many believe. You need an aquarium water conditioner to neutralize the minerals and chemicals. Also as Tina mentioned, misting does little except make the plant owner feel they are doing something helpful. You need a room size humidifier. I have several caltheas and will attest to them doing much better with a humidifier. But you need to know where you are percentage wise, so get yourself a humidistat. So switch to distilled water, and add humidity. I bet the problems will be gone in a few weeks. An FYI, many people have success with the water filters that are added to the faucet. The water filter is also good several other plants that are sensitive. Never never plant, polka dot plant, Janet Craig Dracaenas, and more.

I would also rethink the amount of light. Eight feet seems too little light to me. Planta has a light meter to try. Mine are under Barrina grow lights.

Consider using filtered water or a water conditioner.

Thanks so much everyone. I will look at moving it closer to the window. There are other plants there so that may also help with some humidity. I bought an aquamarine water conditioner. I will check the light with my meter. Thanks so much
