How do I know the difference between spider mites and a spider that has just taken up residency in my plant?

Spider mites are very very small. Usually they're red gray or black. If you take a white piece of paper, hold it underneath and tap the branch or leaves that you think have spider mites. If you see peppery spots on the paper is likely spider mites. If they're alive some of them will be moving. Mites also produce a fine web close to the stem and in the stem axles. Regular spiders are generally larger and have more widespread webs.
