My alocasia golden bone has lived in water for a while now (over a year). It was doing good, growing, flowering, then its leaves started to die (I thought cycling) but it hasn’t produced any new growth in months and it’s drooping. Granted it’s winter over here, but coupled with this new leaf damage, I’m worried. What could be wrong with it? Nothing knocks into it.

What kind of nutrients do you provide? Is it under grow lights or natural light? What do the roots look like? As for the damage, that does look like mechanical damage. It could have been slightly stuck and you are seeing it more as the leaf is aging.

I refill the water with fertilized water but maybe I put too little? It was under a grow light for a long time but then I moved and forgot to replace it, which definitely isn’t helping. The roots were doing good but recently I had a lot of rot and removed them. I didn’t know mechanical damage could visually develop more as it ages, that’s interesting!

Root rot would be the culprit, or more the set back of losing roots. Especially with the change in lighting as this does reduce the capacity for the plant to fight off issues.Since you are growing in water, rot means that there is a lack of oxygen or introduction of bacteria. Staying on top of water changes or a way to introduce air in the water should help if you wish to continue with the same growing method! Is your fertilizer specifically for hydroponic/semi hydroponic? Because that is also one of the common issue (did that mistake myself) that people do as they use a fertilizer that is meant for soil. But since there is no breaking down of the nutrients, it does not become available for the plant to absorb fully.

Thank you so much for your help and knowledge! I really appreciate it. I wasn’t aware that fertilizer had to be specific to hydroponic growing, or that root rot in water meant a lack of oxygen or introducing of bacteria! That’s really good to know. I think I’ll transfer her to soil when I can to give her a better living environment :)
