been having a gnat problem. noticed one gnat and killed it then the next week three more popped up. so far i got some apple cider vinegar, dawn dish soap, and water which caught five of them. i still see one gnat flying around the plant. my main concern is if they’ve laid eggs in the dirt. i cant even tell, i have tried looking up images of eggs or larva but it’s hard to tell with the dirt mix that i use. any thoughts on how to fix this and prevent more gnats?

i had the same issue and had amazing success with using mosquito dunks. you can buy them at most hardware stores and just soak one in water for a few hours then water the plants with it. i was never able to see eggs either but this will absolutely kill them. it worked for me after literally one treatment to all of my plants but it will take a few weeks to see results as the bacteria in them doesn’t kill adults. i’d recommend sticky traps for them honestly, i didnt have much success with apple cider vinegar. hope this helps!!

So I’m just throwing this out there because it was weird to me. I’ve taken care of most of my gnat issues with bottom watering. Its made huge difference. But which one still gives me issues? This one…

I’ve had these before and I let my plant totally dry out for a while so the gnats went away, they like the moist soil

Mosquito Bits/Dunks, as Rachel commented, will kill the larvae ending the life cycle. Use it with every watering. BMC Lift is the easier to use liquid version. Both contain the beneficial bacteria Bti. You should correct the environment that supports fungus gnats. Continuously wet soil helps them thrive. Use a pot with lots of drainage holes to get good drainage. The current pot appears to hold more soil than the plant needs. Excess soil holds unused moisture the plant can’t fully absorb. Downsize to a smaller pot just big enough to hold the roots. The soil will dry out faster with less risk of rot and less chance of supporting gnats. Use a pot with a wider opening that can allow airflow to help evaporation of the water in the soil. 🪴🍀

All the above but this thing was a life safer when my self watering plant got infested (so bad I had to change the soil & water myself now.) it has a cap for bait. I used apple cider vinegar and would find 100 gnats end of day. Now I use it for preventative measures. Much better than the plug ins.
