Help. I am not sure what is going on but my pilea is very brown on the stem. Soil is moist. Leaves are wilting and some yellow. For now, I am leaving it alone but any recommendations would be appreciated. It’s about 2 years old and I have been able to propagate in the past. I am tempted to cut above the brown stem and place in water and once roots start replant??? 😞 it also keeps shooting up whenever there is growth.

It looks very leggy. Is it getting enough light?

It’s close to a window but not direct light. I’ll try moving it. Thank you!!!

From the look of the leaves, it appears overwatered. A contributing factor could be the pot size. It looks large in comparison to the plant.

It definitely could be both low light for this time of year and too much water when the growth is slowing in colder months making it need less water. Get it 10 hours of natural indirect light. Add a grow light running 12-14 hours a day if needed. 🪴🍀 Check for root rot and treat. Change to new dry soil, if needed. Water only when the soil is almost dry and not by a schedule to avoid overwatering. 🪴🍀

Thank you. I will try these things. Quick question, how do you check for root rot?

Carefully remove the pot. Look and smell for mushy, dark and swamp like scents from the soil. Healthy roots are firm and tend to be lighter in color with an earthy scent. Wear gloves in case this is a bacterial or fungal infection. You probably already have black stem rot or similar based on the first photo. Cut out all of the rotten roots. Remove all of the soil. The plant may still die from the stem rot. You could try saving a clean top section for propagation in water. Disinfect the roots, tools, and pot with hydrogen peroxide. Disinfect hands. Replace with fresh soil. Water thoroughly and verify the moisture is low with your finger out a chopstick before watering again. Don’t water with a strict schedule. Fertilize regularly. Reduce or stop fertilizing in colder months if growth slows or stops. 🪴🍀
