Hi everyone, I need a little insight. I live in North Dakota where it gets very very cold this time of year, and even colder yet to come. And we only get 6-7 hours of light a day. I just started collecting house plants over the summer. I don’t know if my plants are dying or if they’re just dormant. All of my alocasias died, and some other plants just look so sad. Am I doing something wrong? Do they need more attention than what I’m giving? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Check the temperature and humidity around them. Use grow lights. They will need at least 8 hours of light a day for tropical plants. Use a light meter or a light meter app to see the intensity of light going to the plants. 🍀🪴

i agree with sunny. i would also recommend giving them a good soak, the soil looks very dry, an both plants are droopy from drying out :)

Since you say your new and house plants I will make a comment about watering. You cannot give your plant too much water. You can only water it too often. When you water, let the water run out the bottom of the pot. Then allow it to drain for 15 or 20 minutes before replacing it in its spot. Then don't water it again until the surface of the soil is just barely moist. The other comments are correct also. Keep your humidity up if you can. In the colder climates the furnace can really dry your inside air. Also don't keep them too close to the windows. That space can be colder than the rest of the house.

Frequency of watering will be different for each type of plant. Some of them will need to be dry halfway down the pot before you water and others only the surface will be dry. You'll just have to learn about each individual plant.

They look thirsty how often are you watering now? Are they getting colder temps in your house?
