Trying to propagate basil, but the leaves have a whitish layer, not sure if it’s mold and the roots are brown. I’ve seen videos and roots are white. I’ve been changing the water frequently and the water looks clear

    Its hard to tell from the picture. The white could be powdery mildew. Maybe compare some photos to see what you think. The brown roots could be do to that

      It happens for various reasons, especially on crops plants. Generally avoiding it involves not over watering, or keeping too humid.

    I wouldn't change the water because it is said that the plant makes root growing hormones and every time you change the water you get rid of them but if the water is starting to look horrible then change it
