I was planting some flowers today and I found AN EGG in the soil where I was trying to plant some bulbs. Does anyone know how to tell if it’s a snake’s egg or not? I live in PA and I’m very new to outdoor gardening. I really have no clue what to do with the lil guy. 😰 (I’m also trying to plant some Asiatic Lillies so any advice would be greatly appreciated.)

For reference size, it’s a very large egg for an animal egg. Pretty much the size of a large chicken’s egg. I think it’s too big and has too hard of a shell for a snake’s egg, but I want to double check

Is there an animal rescue you can call and ask to leave it with?

The closest one is about 45 minutes away. And after some research, it looks like it can’t be a snake egg, but is very likely a duck egg. Which…I wasn’t expecting. I live in a townhome development, so perhaps another animal stole another duck’s egg.

I don’t know if ducks would do this but just to help you along in solving the problem. Is it possible a duck put it there? Meaning, is there a pond in your community or near by? I see ducks flying overhead of my house and I live 100 feet from a creek and a couple miles from a lake. At my old house, a lot of parks in town had ponds with ducks and sometimes I would find ducks in my pool (when the pump was broken, and it was due for a re-plaster so the pool temporarily looked like a pond😅). They travel surprisingly far. So any chance a duck actually put it there? Or maybe like someone said, another animal stole it and left it there.

I think another animal is more likely. I’ve lived in my townhome for 8 years now and have yet to see any ducks or geese, and there’s no pond around, but there IS some woods near one end of the development that was cut into by train tracks. If a duck does in fact emerge I’ll let y’all know, but so far the egg seems perfectly intact and after returning it where I found it I have yet to see anyone come back for it, momma duck or egg thief

Sadly there aren’t many animals at all in my development since its construction. I live in a pretty residential area, so the most I ever see is small birds. I would be pretty intrigued if a mongoose or fox or raccoon stole this egg, and would be very happy if there was in fact a duck family around. …just hoping it’s not a goose egg (it doesn’t seem big enough to be, from what I read. Also geese are just plain mean 😂)

If the egg is kind of leathery it is a tortoise egg. The size of their eggs depends on the size of the tortoise. Some of them can be quite large

Thanks for the tip! It’s hard, and definitely seems harder than your average egg, which makes me think it’s a duck egg.
