Botanical Hack

My Alocasia nebula was getting all weird. The leaves have curled, but the surface of the leaves are normal. The stems are drooped down, but the structure of the stem is strong. Essentially, it looks like it’s short on water. Since I’m tight on my scheduled watering and frequently finger-checking the soil, being short on water made no sense. Based on this, I suspected that its root ball must be pretty small and unable to take up water fast enough to maintain the plant. I pulled the plant out and viola!… barely any roots. With so little roots, reviving can be tough. I could cut off two leaves and hope the roots will keep up with the one remaining leaf. But what if the remaining leaf was already chosen by the plant to be sacrificed and its fate just wasn’t visible yet? In that scenario, I would have cut off the two good leaves only to have the last leaf die off. Instead, I have decided to keep all three leaves and go with a deep water culture. Now it will have access to water 24/7. I’ve added food to the water to get things jump started, and an air stone to get oxygen into the water for the roots, which will help significantly with keeping the roots healthy and white. Now I wait. One thing is for sure; this will either work or it will not. 😜

  1. Botanical Hack

After 4 weeks in water, I’ve lost 2 of the 3 leaves. Now it’s a race; which will happen first, I lose the final leaf or a new leaf comes out. The good thing is that where there were very weak and very few roots 4 weeks ago, there are now a number of robust roots that have grown, with quite a few root branches growing off the new main roots. I don’t think I’ll lose the final leaf before getting a new one, but if I do, I think the root growth will still produce a new leaf.
