I have been having a hard time getting plants to survive - much less thrive - in this area in the macrame hanging basket. There are other similar plants (care and light levels needed) on the same bookshelf that do fine. I am wondering if being placed in the hanging basket could be stressing the plants out??? Maybe putting strain on the roots? It sounds crazy to me but I can’t think of anything else. This plant was at the top of the bookshelf until recently. I moved it down when I moved a peace lily from the basket that also wasn’t doing well. And bam - leaves turned yellow real quick. I’ve trimmed two vines already hoping to save pieces of the plant. I put a plate under the plant tonight hoping a little more stability will help. Any other ideas? I really like the idea of filling this space with a big plant…but I also like my plants to stay alive..

I would check them over for a possible pest. The stability shouldn't matter. The only thing i am thinking is maybe that register is either blowing on, or causing a draft in that direction 🤔

Oh that’s a good point. I’ll check that!

If it is you can get a magnetic directional.... thing-a-ma-bobber 😆 i forget what they call them. But it directs the air flow in a certain direction. You usually see them for floor ones under furniture. But they make them for wall and ceiling.

I put some plastic covers on top of the shelf and adjusted the vent as best I can. Hope that helps until I can get to the store to get one of those vent cover. 🤞

      Nice, hopefully that fixes it.

I want you to know you were right! I added a cover to shield from the heat, removed all the yellow leaves and not one more yellow leaf since! I feel so silly - I think I’ve had four plants fail in that spot 🤦‍♀️. I figured it was too shady or idk what. Thank you!

Note that hanging baskets don’t stress out plants. Insufficient/excessive water, light or nutrients can cause more damage. There should be a light source from a large window or grow lights within a foot of each plant. I don’t see any lights on the shelves. The pothos plants are all look etiolated based on the large gaps between the leaf nodes. I recommend moving the shelves in front of a window to get at least 8 hours of natural light a day. Sunlight ideally should be filtered through sheer curtains to prevent sun burns. The alternative is adding a grow light above each plant. Add bar lights on the lower shelves and individual lights or clip on lights for the top shelf. Run the grow lights at least 12 hours a day. Use full spectrum lighting and not under shelf lighting meant for kitchen cabinets. Plants need the full spectrum that utility lights don’t provide. 🍀🪴

Question: not shown is a table lamp that has a grow light bulb in it and I point it at the shelves like a spotlight. It is probably a foot away from the yellowing plant. I also put grow bulbs in the ceiling light thinking what’s the harm. But are they doing any good or too far away?
