Okay. This is kinda strange. Bought this Calathea White Star from a seller on Etsy a few weeks ago. As I was just checking it over and noticed it looks like it’s in some kind of fiber “bag”. This is the pot it came to me in. I haven’t repotted it yet. Is this restricting the roots, do ya think? Do I need to try to remove it and repot it? ( You can see it just around the circumference of where the stems are growing up from.)

    These don't generally restrict roots at all. It is a coconut coir starting pellet or equivalent, you may have seen them in stores. And the growers don't bother to remove them. I use them for vegetables and some seedlings, have never had the restrictions root growth.

      Personally I remove them when I repot, but cuz they look weird 😆 not because they restrict roots

    It could be the expandable peat pellet as previously mentioned or it could be a small net like sack that wholesale companies use for liners. They are also completely harmless to the plant because the roots grow through it and into the soil. Removing it can actually damage the existing roots.

    I personally always remove them when able. If you are worried about ripping off roots, use scissors to snip it up and that allows you to loosen up the peat it came with and better examine root and lower stem health. Plus if you want to move it to a different medium it’ll look better. Hope this helps and good luck with ur new plant!
