    Is it soft or stiff? Cacti can go through a process called corking, it will be stiff. Otherwise patches like that are usually fungus or scale bug from what ive encountered. You can treat with a fungicide or wipe with alcohol tip if you're seeing bug activity

      Question re corking - can brand new growth become corked? The reason I ask is that I have a succulent that is showing what I assumed to be corking but it’s developing on new growth. I always thought corking was an aging process and increase trunk/stem support.

      I believe it can happen any time, not just to older portions. Have you tried giving a cactus/succ fertilizer, it may help

    Is the damage on the side facing the sun or light? - Cactus can actually get sunburned if turned or rotated. They build up a strong resistance to the sun on the side that “normally” faces the sun or light. The other side can actually get burned if it is facing the sun.
