Hello there plant experts! We are going on holidays for just over a week and are wondering how to prepare our plants for this period of absence, especially given the high temperatures in London these days. They are all doing well right now, but we had dead plants in the past when coming back from holidays and would like to prevent this from happening again. Should we water or fertilise the plants before leaving? Close de curtains or leave them open? Move the plants to a specific place in the home for optimal light? Any important advice? In our living room (bright indirect light): - Song of India dracaena - Philodendron - Jade Plant - Ficus Elastica - Sicklethorn - Chinese Money Plant - Zz Plant In our bathroom (less bright but still natural light): - Never never plant Thank you very much!

i would give them a good watering right before you leave. i don’t have all your plants, but the ones i do (philodendron, chinese money plant, and zz plant) will all be totally fine without watering for a week

Water your plants just before you leave. Jade, Zz, Chinese money plant, Ficus elastica should be good for a week. If you have a thirsty plant that you water more than once a week, get yourself terracotta self-watering spikes and an empty glass wine bottle. Stick the spike in the soil, fill the bottle with water, and put it in the spike. It will slowly water your plant. The only problem is that it wouldn’t work with a small pot - you need a bigger pot to stick the spike. There are also other options for watering your plants while you're on vacation. I can write some if you’re interested.

Agreed that pilea will be fine if you just water before you leave. For plants that need water when I'm away, I use those self watering bulbs as well as a the terracotta self watering system as well. These have saved all my plants and we sometimes are away for two weeks at a time!

If you're away for just over a week I'd say give them a water before you go, unless the soil is still moist a couple inches down, in which case I'm sure they'll be fine, I'd mainly watch out for plants in south facing windows that they don't get scorched, but overall you have a bunch of relatively hardy plants... In an ideal world I'd get a friend to pop in to check on them... But I'm sure they'll be fine!

I give a good watering and add a layer of mulch/rock to the top of soil. Be sure to remove when you return.
