I had an outbreak of fungus gnats a couple weeks ago😭 I now have a plug in gnat trap, yellow sticky traps in all my plants, and have been watering with a mixture of mosquito bits, peppermint castille oil, hydrogen peroxide, and insecticide-but they aren't going away! I am also putting rocks/gravel or sand on top of the soil to try to prevent future larvae. I'm getting so frustrated and hoping I don't have to repot all my plants! Any advice?? How long does it take to kill off an outbreak?

I do have a couple water propagations by my plants, would the standing water contribute to the gnat problem?

If anything, it will help, sometimes they drown in the water.

The water props have nothing to do with your problem. The problem is they are living in your soil. Did you pot with fresh potting soil recently? I find that most of the time the problem starts from the soil we purchase. They are already living in there.

Oh shoot okay! I haven't repotted with any new soil recently...but I repotted one plant with my typical soil mix (that I've had for months). I put it in a quarantine zone but not sure if it will get gnats anyways...

With what do you mix and treat, if you don’t mind me asking. I want to start making my own mix due to gnats in Miracle Grow

Miracle gro is prob one of the worse. My soil mixes usually consist of only 20-30% potting soil if I use it. I use Foxfarm soil. I know of users treating their soil but not sure how. Maybe someone here can explain.

My only advice would be to start bottom watering. Gnats live in moist top soil. This will help keep top soil dry for longer. It might not fully solve the problem, but it’ll definitely help. And place apple cider vinegar cup wrapped with saran wrap poking few holes into it. 😅

what helped for me was watering less - albiet it was from a mix of me getting a little lazy and starting to rely on letting my plants tell me when they need water: droopy or curly leaves, and the weight of the pot decreaces significantly if in a nursery pot of at least 4 in. good luck!!

I add a drop of this to my water and it has completely wiped out my fungus gnats. It’s supposed to be used in aquariums so you really only need the tiniest bit when watering

Good to know! Where did you buy it? I can't seem to find it on amazon

systemic granules! an absolute life saver for me! i believe fungus gnat larvae feed off the roots. the granules make every part of the plant toxic to pests so they’ll eventually die if they feed on the roots.

I have it in my soil! I've heard of people mixing & watering their plants with it as well..have you tried?
