So, I had bought a fungus gnat killer over a month ago along with vinegar traps. I have not seen gnats for a good 3 weeks. I was still watering my plants with it and was careful not to overwater. Even on days where there’s no sun, I would skip days but I noticed it still takes longer for my plants to dry out so now.. i think I am about to have a major gnat problem. I’ve inspected my the soil of my plants. They have the larvae and adults. A few days ago, I started bottom watering for all my plants that needed watering. But some of my plants that I had previously top watered are still damp. What do I do with those plants? I just purchased sticky traps and waiting for them to arrive. Are my plants going to die soon? Help!

If you visually see larvae in the soil I’d scrap the top inch or so of soil off (or as much as you can without damaging the roots). Make sure to put it in a sealable bag or outside-I recommend both to eliminate any risk of them flying back inside. Also what soil did you use? Soil composition, as well as a plants water consumption, are major factors in how long it takes soil to dry. If the soil doesn’t have enough inorganic material, it won’t drain quickly, and it greatly increases the chances of a fungus gnat infestation. Bottom watering helps prevent the top soil from getting drenched so that will definitely help.

I used tropical soil and added coco coir and orchid bark. I can’t really put them outside because it’s cold. I do have some plants like calathea white fusion that needs to be evenly moist but it never had problems before until now. So do I bottom water indefinitely? Should I still use those gnat killer solution in my watering? Thank you!

The life span of an adult fungus gnat is about 2 weeks. But they lay their egg in moist soil. And that could be at the top or the bottom of the plant. Wherever its moist The acv traps are good for the adults but don’t affect the eggs until they are big enough to fly to it. I would change the soil for a chunkier mix. Planta has a video tutorial and you can search YouTube. Also they will not kill your plants but are so annoying that they will make you want to! 😩😩 Isolation the plant until you are sure they are gone.

I never had problems with them until moving to a more humid environment. My plants love it. So, do the gnats 😭

Because gnats love moisture. Lol. I love this group and the helpful comments but ultimately you have to take what works for you and leave the rest. Everybody’s environment isn’t the same. If it’s working for you stick with it. Without the gnats of course. 😩 I think people know by now that I break all the plant rules lol and my plants are healthy and happy. (Knock on wood😁)
