Hey yall, I recently moved and my plants aren’t the happiest. I just noticed today that my basil has mold looking fuzz growing on the soil where the mulch wasn’t covering. Then I noticed it on some of my other plants but not all of them. I sprinkled some cinnamon but not sure if I should be worried about a mass contamination of some sort.

Hi! Make sure the cinnamon is pure saigon cinnamon — also this will only help in preventing fungus gnat larvae. You will need to manually remove the mold. Just scrape the top layer off and check to make sure that the mold has not reached further down into the soil. If you want to be on the safe side you could repot, but I have gotten surface mold a few times —simply from soil being too moist and compact — so I scraped off the top and used a chopstick to poke some holes down in the soil and checked the drainage. Hope this helps!

Hydrogen peroxide and water mix kills mold without having to scrape anything. A 1:3 or 1:4 ratio will get the job done; just spray the soil with the mixture and let it do all the work

fungal growth on the top of the soil could indicate root rot as well, check the roots and either treat the soil with hydrogen peroxide or just use fresh
