Hi everyone! I recently got succulent from a friend’s house, where it was on a fully shaded porch and received pretty much no care. It looked pretty much just like this when I got it. Succulents are not my forte, but even I can tell this isn’t looking good. I repotted it into fox farm potting soil when I got it, and gave it a good watering. The old soil was completely dry and had basically turned to dust. However, about two days later the leaves feel mushy. I have now put it in completely dry soil. It’s in a south facing window in a climate that stays above 45°, even at night. I’m thinking this potting soil is too dense, and it might need to be in a different type of pot? At this point I can’t tell if I’ve messed with it too much - Is there any hope for this plant? ***update: thank you for the help everyone! I am going to give a succulent potting mix a try and see if that helps!

I don’t know too much about succulents, but my sister and my niece are incredible with them. They gave me several and said put them in succulent soil, and they don’t need a lot of water. Sounds to me that you’re in the same boat I’ve been in where you gave it too much water. I would repot in succulent soil and see how it goes

The picture is not too clear. But, this looks like an aloe vera. It won’t well in standard potting mix. It stays too wet. I agree that succulent mix is best for this plant.

Sounds like it may have already had root rot when you got it. Especially since you watered it and it still looks very thin and not plump. Did you notice the roots when you replanted it?

They had a couple compromised areas but didn’t look as bad as expected when I repotted it.
