Hello! I bought this alocasia from Home Depot. It was miserable and droopy but seemed to perk up after I watered/fertilized it. HOWEVER, I didn’t inspect it well enough at the store and found little spots on it. I can’t tell if it’s spider mites? I’m still fairly newish and my only issue has been gnats so far so this is definitely different! I blasted it with cold water and sprayed it down with insecticidal soap. It doesn’t have any webbing though…if anyone has other ideas please let me know!

    Do they move when you look at them really close? And have you found any thin webbing?

      Yes! There were this tiny white line that was slowly crawling. But I didn’t spot webbing

      Ah okay, that could be a beneficial mite but just for precaution, wait a week, if you see webbing or them multiplying then hose it down just like how you did and hit it with more insecticide :) oh and make sure to quarantine it from other plants for the time

      Thanks! Now that I know it can be 3 different things I’m hoping this is the problem lol it sounds less scary

    They could be thrip larvae. I’d get Bonide granuals and put it in the soil. That should take care of it in combination with the insecticidal soap, 🧼 nice a week or when you water . I would keep the plant far away from your other plants. You want to be diligent if they are thrips because they’re hard to get rid of and can spread to your other plants because they can fly. You can also go on YouTube and search for “how to get rid of house plant pests” that’s how I learned to get rid of thrips when I brought home an Alocasia from the grocery store. 🍀

      I also repotted mine once I saw the thrips flying around. But Alocasias are known to go into shock after repotting so make I would do it as a last resort.

      It’ll be okay. When I posted my issue on Planta back in October there were a lot of people that made it seemed like the end of the world. Don’t let it stress you out. Those granuals work well. I’d put them in the soil of the plants it was next to and inspect them. Either spray your plants down with the Insecticidal soap now or if they look clear, next time you water. Keep the care up for about six weeks (the life cycle of the larvae / when they hatch). Mine appeared to be gone after 3 weeks (I would se them flying in my office) But if you’re not seeing them fly, you may end up killing the larvae and have no issues. The granuals and the soap together did the trick for me. Now I use sacred elements or perfect plantista (leaf guard spray) as a preventative solution. I shower my plants in the sink pray them down with the leave spray and either let them air dry or pat them dry after the leaf gaurd has sat on the leaves for awhile. For plants with sensitive leaves I spray less often or just use the water sprayer in my sink. I keep my three alocasias grouped together in their own spot as a precaution. I’m no expert but I just recently went through it so I know it can be stressful. You can get rid of them. Just keep up the maintenance for a solid 6-8 weeks. 🍀👍🏻

    Oh and if they are mealy bugs, take a cotton swab with alcohol and wipe them off until they are gone and the plant is clean. Make sure to check all the stems and the spray with the insecticidal soap. I have not had them but I watch @wildfern on YouTube and @Planterina and have learned from them.

    Also I believe for most plants it’s generally best to use lukewarm water because cold water can shock them. Not sure if this is also true for alocasia but I figured I’d mention it just in case.
