Help. Newish plant mom. Discovering holes in leaves of otherwise healthy plants. New holes in more leaves and more plants daily. 2 weeks ago noticed yellowing leaves on 2 plants and found early webbing - isolated the two with spider mites, washed well and using insecticide (lost a gorgeous majestic palm last year to spider mites and am still a bit traumatized). Inspected all other plants, cleaned well with water and polished leaves with neem oil - no mite signs but a few extra yellow leaves. Chalked it up to winter but keep inspecting daily. Still no webbing or noticeable mites (using white paper, magnifying glass etc) but seeing new holes on leaves on more leaves on more plants daily. Southern facing natural light. But winter less so and stated using a grow light (from a distance) occasionally to supplement. It’s been very dry in LA so I’ve been doing extra humidifier with a drop of peppermint oil. No other changes. Anything preventative I can do. Not against insecticides if it saves my plants.

Sometimes when the leaf has a hard time emerging (or when we help it) the new leaf receives physical damage that expands as the leaf grows. That’s definitely what I see in the 2nd pic. These spots seem normal to me.

Omg. Thank you. I’ve been really worried. But don’t want to treat and mess up their balance.

I would go google pics of pest damage. It’s kinda easy to pinpoint spider mites because of the patterns. I hear the same with thrips. Mealy bugs are also easy cuz you can see them. And then there’s what happens to fiddles and philodendron when they don’t have the moisture they want while the leaf is emerging (physical damage). I’d say to try to keep an eye out for those particular plants when they have a new leaf coming and give them water maybe a day or two early…

Thank you really helpful. Makes sense re growth/water for those two. Realizing Ive been wanting a how to manual with a definitive fix — yet like most things worthwhile, experience and study matter. Will keep inspecting and googling. And maybe come across a plant doctor who makes house calls. ;)
