Is my frosty fern a goner? I got it before Thanksgiving break and when I left, I left it in its nursery pot and gave it a good long soak. When I came back it was wilted and not happy (first picture!). I gave it a lot of water and TLC for a few days and then moved it to regular pot with drainage in hopes that it would help to retain more water and bounce back (because it was definitely under watered even though I was only gone for 6 days). It’s been I think a week or two now and it’s looking more brown and dead (second picture). Can I cut it back and will it come back? Or is it a lost cause? The last picture is what it looked like when I got it!

I would wait until it’s completely brown before you give up. In my experience, repotting a plant when it’s not doing well tends to make it worse, but sometimes it’s your only option. I would make sure you keep it away from cold conditions, keep it away from direct light, and anything else you can do to make it happy. But ferns are really difficult, so don’t feel too guilty if it dies.

Thanks Molly! I definitely don’t want to give up on it yet! I was worried about repotting it but also was worried it wouldn’t get any better if I didn’t!

I would recommend cutting off anything crispy/dead, and giving it time. Btw - although it’s commonly called frosty fern, it’s not actually a fern — it’s a spikemoss (genus Selaginella). I had one that i thought was a goner, but after I cut off the dead foliage, I eventually started seeing new growth!

Perfect! Yeah I knew it was a moss variety, which is so cool! Thanks for the advice I’ll definitely cut away the super crispy stuff!
