I received this plant from a friend in August. All the leaves s have died with this unfurled one hanging on. It’s looked like this for over a month. It won’t open and there’s dryness on both ends. I’m afraid to over water it but maybe…. I just want to give this one a fighting chance.

Looks like a calathea (ornata?). They tend to like moist soil, high humidity, and distilled or rainwater. Divas!

Yeah looks like it needs water. If you’re scared of overwatering, once the water has run through the pot, tilt it to one side to let any excess drain out. That’s how I started watering my plants after having overwatered my first couple and it really helped.

At this point I’d also take it out of the pot and check the roots, if the other leaves have died, it could need a smaller pot if the root ball is smaller from roots dying off. Also just a good way to see what’s going on with your plants in general.

If it dies, I wouldn’t throw it out. Mine had died on me twice. It was slowly dying from water imbalance and so I neglected it. Instead of chucking it, I snipped all the dead leaves (which was the whole plant). After a month or so, it sprouted a new leaf and more. I stopped neglecting it and it came back to life and looking healthier. I recently repotted this. I never changed the soil even when it died. The roots were so healthy! So… don’t give up on it!
