I’m battling thrips for the first time and need suggestions on how to curb them before infecting my whole collection. They are definitely spreading since I caught the first plant. Couple things: - I don’t have the option to isolate plants as my living space is pretty much a studio - systemic granules aren’t available in Canada so thats not an option So far I’ve: - sprayed with insecticide soap (all infected plants plus a few others preventatively) - added diatomaceous earth to the soil - removed any severely infected foliage - have sticky traps around to catch as many adults as possible I’ve seen research about coating the whole plant and soil with diatomaceous earth and repeating 1x/1-2 weeks for 3-4 treatments. Has anyone tried this? Or had success with that? Any other suggestions are welcome!

Spray off the leaves as thoroughly as you can (if possible wait until the plant needs to be watered to prevent overwatering)-make sure you spray BOTH sides of EVERY leaf to eliminate as many as you can-being diligent with this will eradicate the most thrips possible. Once the leaves are cleaned you can spray them with a hydrogen peroxide/water mixture (1:4 or 1:5 ratio) to kill off any remaining critters. This mixture is completely safe for the plants so it’s a great first step before resorting to any chemicals. If the infestation is really bad, Captain Jacks Deadbug Brew will take care of the rest. I also agree with PlantyAnn that any distance you can put between the infected plants and the healthy plants would help prevent them spreading to your other plants. You should also repeat any (or all) of these steps if there is still a small population of them left behind after the first treatment.
