Hello everyone! I need help! I have a Ficus Burgundy plant which I purchased about 2 months ago. When I got her she was thriving and I’m afraid now she’s getting worse and worse. I made a few mistakes as I am a total plant beginner. First of all I repotted her for no good reason into a bigger pot. I was told that wasnt a good idea as it would be too much shock and put a strain on the plant to grow bigger roots, so I moved her back to her original pot. Now with the beginning of Fall here in Texas, she has started dropping leaves like crazy. Even though I water her about every two weeks her soil seems to always be humid. I water her like this because since her soil doesnt dry, I’m afraid of over watering. Any way, please help. I have moved her to a place with more light hoping this would stop the leaves from dropping and i thought she was doing better but she dropped another huge leaf today 😭

I have never owned one of these but I do have some general suggestions! Does the pot she is in now have drainage? If not, the soil might be staying wet because excess water doesn’t have anywhere to go. This could be leading to root rot even though you are infrequently watering. However, she could also simply be adjusting to her new environment, especially since you repotted her and then repotted her again, which can be a lot for a plant! Trying to give her more light is a good idea, because it may help some of the excess water to evaporate if that’s an issue. I’d try pulled her out of the pot to see if her roots are squishy and brown. If they look okay and she’s not terribly root bound then you can put her back in the same pot. But if there is some evidence of rot I would plant her in a new pot with drainage, even if it’s the same size as the one she is in now!

Also, does it look like she is trying to push out a few new leaves? If she is, leaves may be dropping because she’s putting all her energy into those. That would be perfectly normal and not a concern at all! But the above suggestions may still be worth checking out.

Of course! Happy to give some suggestions, and if there’s still issues you can make a follow up post! She’s a beautiful plant and I hope she starts perking up some!

This was happening to mine and was a sign of the start of root rot. Make sure she gets a well draining soil & only water when completely dry. These do tend to like a lot of light so good call moving it!

I fear that she might be overwatered. Watering her every two weeks might be too much. These should really be watered when the soil is almost completely dry or very close to that. Leave it near a spot where she would get bright indirect light. This will help her soil dry faster but like was mentioned, you might want to check the soil and roots and make sure she isn’t getting root rot. You might be able to save her if it hasn’t gone on for too long.

Thank you! I checked the roots and there was no rot. I would say it was a little moist. This app says to water every 10 days. Should I go for 20?

Oh that’s good news. Don’t water on a schedule. When Planta tells you it’s time to water, just stick a clean chopstick in the soil and if it comes out clean (no wet soil), go ahead and water it. Otherwise, just snooze the alert for 2 or 5 days if the soil is almost dry.
