My lilac bush has died and this is on the stems. What is it and did this kill it?

    There are many diseases that affect lilac bushes including blight. They even state remove the bush and don’t plant another one and the same spot for 10 years! I don’t think this is a disease. I googled “lilac bark” and found several images with this type of bark. There were no discussions about diseases associated with the bark images. I even found an image on a plant sale website showing the bark like this. So, I believe something else killed your shrub.
