Please help! My aloe was doing completely fine, until today I noticed one stem wasn’t doing well. Concerned, I took it out of the soil to see what was going on and remove the culprit stem. When I removed it from the pot ALL of its roots fell off. The plant is otherwise healthy and has been doing well. I’ve attached a photo of the stem that caused the issue as well. I’m only a beginner with plants but I’ve had this aloe for a year and it was my first ever plant and one that I love dearly. Any help in where to go from here would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like root rot. I would let it air dry for a few days in lower light. Watch the plant to make sure the decay is not spreading. If you see it spreading you may need to cut the affected tissue away and treat with hydrogen peroxide. Once it’s stabilized, repot into dry cactus/succulent soil. If you are heavy with the watering can, cut it with some perlite… maybe up to 25%. I wouldn’t go crazy with it. Since the root system looks to be mostly gone, I would use a smaller pot. You don’t want the media to hold onto a lot of extra water that the plant can’t use. Let it rest for a week before watering. Be mindful of your watering over the next couple of months. It will need some but the developing root system will not need a lot at first. Good luck

Thank you so much for all of the advice! It is drying now and I will continue to let it dry and get a smaller pot for it as well. Fingers crossed!

Yes, and try not to water at the crown or this will continue to happen. Best wishes!

You should definitely put it in a glass of water with no soil just water that’s happened to me with one of my aloe. It will start growing back and then you can pot it!
