I would cut away all the dead brush and it could be root rot or not enough water have you checked the soil?

How do you know if it’s root rot?

I love Sweet William. I suggest watering thoroughly before preparing for a repot or tuck it into a space on the ground that does not receive midday/afternoon sun. Dianthus will sometimes air layer itself to the soil so be careful when pulling clumps apart. Try to keep roots intact but remove any bad roots (mushy or dead). I think it will recover just give it love and time.
