i just noticed 2 leaves on my snake plant are super squishy and yellow. all signs point to overwatering, but i’m confused because i’ve been bottom watering, which should eliminate that issue. i also moved it to a brighter area about a week ago, but i thought that would help. did i do something wrong? and how can i fix it ?

Ugh. I’ve been going through this with a huge snake plant of mine that’s getting destroyed. I heard someone say it was a disease that snake plants can get but I don’t know much else about it. Hopefully someone else will know more.

unfortunately overwatering can’t be eliminated, except by giving your plant water only when it needs, and no more. did you let the soil dry out completely, and then some, before watering your snake plant? they are extremely succulent. i left one in an apartment i moved out of and had the landlady return it to me over a year later when someone else moved in, it hadn’t been watered once but still was holding on. i’d recommend checking for root rot on yours, they are prone to it, and trim the roots and repot if necessary

i usually water it when planta gives the notification, as long as it’s dry. it seemed very dry for the first 2-3 inches so i watered it. next time should all of the soil be dried out before i water it again?

Definitely!! Overwatering refers to the frequency with which you water, and if you are bottom watering too frequently then you can still overwater. Snake plants like to dry out completely in between waterings. In your plants profile there should be a small “i” with a circle. If you click that it should give you information about how dry the soil should be before watering again. If you’re unsure of if its dry or not, use a wooden chopstick and stick it all the way to the bottom of the pot, dirt will stick to it at the level that still has moisture.

i reckon following planta’s schedule is probably the issue, in my experience this app recommends i water my plants far too often unless they are in a super chunky mix. i usually update the watering schedule once i am comfortable knowing how often to water a specific plant. for example, i have a spider plant in a 10” plastic pot in a custom soil blend, planta recommended i water every 10 days but experience snoozing the watering twice led me to adjust the schedule to every 14 days.

I’m using Planta’s watering prompts to remind me to start checking. I still struggle sometimes with over watering but at least I have better odds of getting it right
