I saw the occasional, what I thought, was a fungus gnat creepin’….then I did my pest hocus pocus and moved on, thinking it was so weird having just a couple…then I was due for a progress update on my “ruby’s necklace” and O. M. G. — flapjackin MEALYBUGS 🤢. The male ones looks like fungus gnats and the females are the cotton-like clumps in your plants. I am never sunning my plants outside again!!!!!!!!! 😖😭

I just went through a mealy bug war with my Hoya Hindu rope, I had to sit down and clean her with qtips dipped in alcohol for a couple of weeks. Finally I dunked her in a mix of alcohol, Castile soap and neem oil and I’ve been checking for 2 weeks and so far no more of those suckers. My Hoya was a little sad but she’s starting to look better.

This could very well be mealybugs, but apparently ruby necklaces also produce white fuzzy spots, mostly on the joints of the plant, that are commonly mistaken for mealybugs! Not sure why, but I guess it’s a part of their normal growth. I learned this researching awhile back when I VIOLENTLY kept treating mine over and over for “mealybugs” that kept returning 😵‍💫

Oh yeah additionally - the way I distinguished between mealies and the natural fuzz was by dabbing them w/ alcohol; if it turns brownish upon contact, it’s most likely a mealy.
