I have a question about ants. When should I worry about them? They live my passion flower vine, caladiums and now my herb garden. I’ve been using diatomaceous earth around the edges of my pots and then tonight I find them going into the drainage holes of my herb planter. Help.

Ants shouldn't be a problem. They are just apart of outside. They don't eat the plants. Some people even like them in their pots because they help aerate the soil. Ants like sugar so if you have honeysuckle or other sweet flowering plant, they will keep coming. I've used a Borax solution with good result's. You can find directions/recipe online.

On a whim, check for other pests that may bring the ants in. Ants often farm and protect pests that produce honeydew, a sugary, sticky substance….think aphids/mealybugs/etc.

I just watched a thing about how ants are a necessary and beneficial insect to fig trees specifically, and they eat and attack a certain kind of mean wasp, that which will kill off another kind of good pollinating wasp which pollinate the fig flowers so it can make fruit. So without the ants, the tree cannot make its fruit. Interesting world!

Very interesting. The ants we have are the little black ones.
