Are you using tap water? The buildup is typically caused from salt, or minerals in the water. You should definitely be cleaning it off. Clay pots are very porous allowing the soil to dry out faster, but the build up will actually hinder that. Also, how is the soil itself? Does the water just start running though or does it actually soak in?

Or it might need better light, what kind of plant is it?

Hi! I have the same plant. When repotting, make sure to keep the plant in a pot that’s only 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball. Never go bigger! Also, I use indoor all purpose potting mix, extra perlite, and some River pebbles for my plant’s soil. It’s my own little custom blend but it works great! It looks like you’ve got it in a terracotta pot which is great! This plant needs bright, indirect light and while it does like a mist from time to time, the watering is tricky. You want to water the plant when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. This plant doesn’t like being dried out but doesn’t like to be overwatered either. Have you looked at the roots and checked for root rot? If there’s rot, the roots will be yellow or black and smell. Healthy roots are white. I hope this helps you! Also, if you’re struggling with the lighting, I’d recommend getting a 10 dollar halo grow light for the plant from Amazon. :)

P.S, it looks like your plant is stretching a ton too which means it would love more light!

No problem! Also once you repot, allow the plant time to adjust and settle down to minimize shock :)

I commend you for trying. I have no luck with polka dot plants. My daughter gave me hers to babysit and I promptly killed them. I love the polka dot plant and I admire anyone who does well with them. You can do it!
