Having some troubles with my ZZ turning yellow. I did just water it a few days ago but soil feels dry. I don’t have experience with root rot so I don’t know what I’m looking for.

you’re supposed to be looking for dark squishy roots. i would suggest putting it into some leca filled with water and plant food/fertilizer. Also maybe see if you have drainage holes and a good amount of sun for photosynthesis to do it’s thing.

Your soil might be hydrophobic if it feels dry right after watering so the roots of that stalk aren’t getting enough water. Try soaking the soil next watering. Sometimes I just shower my zz for a bit (light spray, not power spray) to ensure all the soil is wet.

If you pinch the root between the pads of your fingers and it collapses under your pressure it’s rotted, if you pinch and pull (gently) and the root comes off and leaves a tiny thread of a root behind, it’s rotted. If they’re squishy and floppy and brown, it’s rotted. Some plants have naturally green, or red, or brown *furry* roots (ferns sometimes), but 90% of plants have white to off-white roots when they’re healthy. Weird but, think of the colors teeth can be and that’s the goal.

Some of those look like they need to be trimmed off - zz plants have that ball that holds lots is water - i bottom water so I let the plant soak in water for a good 20 minutes then let it all drain and walk away.. try using a stick to see if dirt is dry I have a hard time seeing with my fingers

Some great tips above about identifying. Root rot isn’t always caused by leaving it in water too long or too frequent watering. If you don’t water enough, roots can dry out and die. When you water those dead roots, the organic matter will rot because the roots can’t take up water. Think of misting a dead leaf; it just gets soggy and deteriorates. One of my ZZ’s had a yellowed stalk like that and unfortunately that stem was a goner. But if the rhizome is not squishy, I would plant it back in and another stem will grow from it.
