I have leaf damage on my sweet potato vine, Ipomoea ‘Ace of Spades.’ It came that way when I bought it. Looks puckered. Then, the small leaf veins dry out around the puckered/embossed areas. The leaf cracks at those sites. Looks like it’s disintegrating. No apparent insect chew holes or leaf miners found. No insects found. I inspect every single leaf and quarantine new plants 30 days. No other issues on this plant. I propagated several small pieces. New growth looks fine on both the cuttings and at the mother plant. Any ideas? Background: I’m in Zone 9. Got it two weeks ago from the grocery store (delivery). I thought it was heat stress from the 100°+F temperatures here in the South causing the cracked dry leaf veins. But, no dry leaf tips, yellowing or wilting were seen. No bugs. So, I did not return it to the store. The soil was very dry when it arrived and retains water about 5 days before completely drying out. I use a moisture meter. I typically water every 2 -3 days in this heat. It’s kept outside on a covered patio. It gets morning light until noon. Gets bright indirect light after noon. I have not fertilized it the 2 weeks I had it.

I might not really know, but it looks to me like the damage is on the more mature leaves. Is it possible that whatever larvae was eating your plant is now gone? It might have moved out when it transformed into next life phase. If you think this could be it, you could trim off the damaged leaves and the plant will fill out again with only beautiful leaves. Another option is that whatever is eating it only does so at night and finds cover elsewhere during day. This option doesn’t sound like any I have experience with except for slugs. In which case sooner or later you’d find slime trails.

You are right. It’s the mature leaves showing the problems. New green leaves don’t have it. Don’t think it’s leaf miners for the majority of the leaves. They just pucker, then, dry and tear at the fine vein lines from my observations the last two weeks. I also move the hanging basket around to avoid snails. No silver snail trails on the basket.

The bottom leaf on the first picture looks like it might have been made by leaf miners which burrow and eat from inside the leaf

I think this was created by insect. Inpatient thin top layer of leaf CNN is missing. But, no tearing all the way through it and only on this leaf. I’m will change the soil, next incase someone is in there. I wanted to give it time to adjust before doing so.
