Hello! My plant has little bugs crawling in it. The roots have some kind of stuff on it. Lol Im new to this and I don’t know what to do. This is my only potted plant. Any suggestions by looking at this picture. I thought I was watering it right….the leaves look good but the bugs 😳 Whats on the roots?

Not sure about the roots. Do the bugs look like gnats? They’re a pretty common problem, gnats. You can buy traps on lots of places like Amazon or Etsy or even probably Walmart if you look hard enough. They come with sticky paper that little bugs stick to. The gnats like the roots and soil, so rustle them up by moving around the top layer of soil around after you install the traps, and hundreds with be rid of. :) Look for ‘gnat traps’ online and order something similar to this, hope this helps!

You can put a layer of sand on top of the soil. The gnats live and lay eggs in the top of moist soil with the organic material in it. The sand will keep them out. The traps will help with the gnats that are there already. The sand will prevent more.

Can I get sand from the garden center? Is there a certain kind? I did the peroxide mix but I still see bugs in the dirt! I don’t see any gnats flying around tho.

my only comment about adding sand or gravel to the top is that it will retain moisture in your soil which can lead to root rot if you leave it too long!

I haven’t had a root rot problem with the sand. I get it from HD- sandbox sand. I don’t put very much. Just a thin layer.
