I’ve had this cactus plant for almost 8 years and it just recently started developing these black (mold-looking) spots. They are in an almost straight line going up the plant. Maybe 6 or 7 spots. I have had him in the same pot for over 5 years and it doesn’t have drainage.. which I’m aware is probably not the smartest with a cactus, but since he had always been growing and having no issues whatsoever, I didn’t see as too much of a problem. Am I going to lose this plant? Do I just need to replant him in a draining planter? THANKS!

I would repot him with drainage and see if that is the problem, many times people water on the cactus and it caused mold spots. I don’t believe that is the problem and that he just needs a bigger pot and drainage since he is pretty big!

I’ve honestly just been so afraid to replant him 😩😂 but I think you’re right, I hadn’t even thought about it being too big for that pot. But he has grown a lot over the last few years. Thank you!

It sort of looks like armored scale to me, not mold.

To check if armoured scale, rubbing alcohol on a q-tip will wipe the bug away
