Hi! I got a string of pearls plant a little over a month ago and ever since I brought it home, it’s just kept dying more and more. I follow the Planta watering schedule and only barely watered it twice in the last month. I just don’t really know best practices for taking care of this plant. Any help/advice is appreciated! I may just throw this one out and get a new one and try to find better ways to take care of it. I don’t think it’s gonna come back, here’s a pic of when I got it compared to today

If this plant is living inside, it will probably need a grow light. It could be lack of bright light… but keep in mind it doesn’t like direct sunlight. A little dappled sun is ok, but should be bright but mostly shady area if outside, or if inside a grow-light or very bright room… no direct sun through a window or it will scorch the pearls. Hope that wasn’t too confusing. Its hard as a beginner to understand what the different light needs of a plant are. I struggled in the beginning with that too.

I’m no string of pearls expert, but this is probably due to overwatering. As great as this app is, watering these on a set schedule feels risky to me. They’re basically succulents, and could probably go for a month without watering. I saw a tip at one point that they only need water when the little “window” (the small slit) on the pearls starts to “close”. I’ve also heard that bottom watering is best for these so they end up only taking what they need. Hope your luck with these turns around!

Yes, gritty soil, shallow pot, tons of sun and less watering. SOP is very hard to maintain as a new plant owner. It’s considered “expert only” or”high maintenance”. I started with string of bananas and string of dolphins first, mastered that then moved to pearls.

String of pearls, and most strings I have ever had, are very picky about watering over the roots. Because they are shallow and sensitive to getting wet, it’s recommended that you water the plant from the drainage holes below. I place my pots of strings in a bowl, fill with water until about half of the pot is underwater and check every 10 minutes (the bigger the plant, the longer you’ll leave in the water)

Don’t throw it away!! Like said, they root at a shallow level. Mine did the same thing over the summer, so I took the remaining strings and put them in new soil about at inch down, with some pearls in the soil and they completely regrew and it’s beautiful now.
