Can anyone help me figure out my issues with these two plants? The first one is a calathea zebra plant. I’ve had it for about 6 months and bring it to the bathroom when I shower because I know they like humidity. But over the last couple weeks a lot of the leaves are curling up and browning. Thought it was humidity so I bought a humidifier. But now I’m reading it could be underwatering which seems weird to me. I’m in a similar boat with my fern. Was doing great for the first 6 months. Now the leaves are drying out and I can’t figure out why. P.S. these pictures were taken yesterday and they look a little worse then this now.

Are you watering the calathea with distilled or filtered or rain water? They are sensitive to lime in tap water, and eventually if watered with tap, the lime and minerals will build up around the roots, leading to the plant showing symptoms of being underwatered because even though you are watering appropriately, the roots are so caked with these minerals that they can’t absorb it, so they will seem dehydrated. Also, how dry does the soil get between waterings? Also, have you inspected it for spider mites, and /or are there any fungus gnats around? And have you checked the roots for rot? Its hard to say whats the cause without knowing a bit more. But right off the bat, I will say that the size of your pot/soil looks a bit too large for the size of the plant, which could cause it to hold onto water for too long since not enough leaves to use it all fast enough. And… in my research I’ve come to understand that Calatheas like consistency in whatever the normal humidity is. They will acclimate to whatever it is just like a human in different regions. Going to extreme different humid baths back to dry just will cause fungal issues and possibly rot, and prevent photosynthesis if the leaves get wet (misting etc). Hope that helps!

I am water the calathea with tap water right now. Definitely didn’t know that about them and will be switching. I usually test the soil every couple days to check the moisture level. So it has never dried out. I haven’t seen any type of bug on it or around it so I am going with a no for those issues. Thank you for the humidity information that is very useful. Do you think I should stop doing the humidity treatments?

As for the fern: looks like way too much soil for such a tiny plant. I’d take it out of that pot and downsize based on how many roots you have. You don’t want any bigger of a pot & soil than the general size of the root ball. Although ferns don’t like to completely dry out, this will allow it to use the water quicker and have time to breathe slightly between waterings.

What kind of light is the calethea getting? I’ve had plants curl up around the edges & brown on the tips when they’re getting too harsh of light and getting sun scorched

The calathea never receives direct light. It is in the brightest room in my house but is hung on the wall where the sun doesn’t touch it directly.

I have the curling issue with my lemon lime maranta and have tried everything. Finally changed to using rain water and it’s helping new growth but that makes sense if the roots are caked in minerals they aren’t absorbing water properly
