Does anyone know what the tiny little midges/flies are that hang out around some potting mix? I have my pointsetta and my money plant in the same potting mix, and they both have teensy little flies around them. The flies don’t seem to be on the plant—just the soil. Is it harmful, and will it affect my other plants? Can I treat it with a pesticide? I tried the yellow sticky traps, but they don’t get them all. Any advice is much appreciated!

Sound like gnats. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the soil and lightly rub it in the top of the soil. Cinnamon will not harm your plant but gnats don’t like the smell (and it’s better than using a pesticide!) The yellow sticky traps work wonders too! I have a TON of dead gnats on my yellow traps, haha.

      Thanks! I’ll try the cinnamon!

I have this thing that plugs into the wall and emits a blue light and has a sticky trap on the back. They flock to it and I hardly see gnats anymore.

I have one of those in another room, and come to think of it, those plants don’t have gnats. I might get some more! Along with the cinnamon 😄 Thanks so much!
