So I got a lemon lime maranta (prayer plant) a few months ago. The past two weeks the leaves have been yellowing rapidly until the leaf is completely yellow and the tips curl and then turn black. I saw a single mealy bug and have been treating it with no sight of them since. It has continued to turn yellow. I took it out of the pot to see if there was a root mealy bug infestation, which their wasn’t. The soil was extremely damp at the bottom, which I took out and replaced with new soil and haven’t watered since then. I am continuing to treat for mealy bugs. My leaves are still turning yellow. I am not sure what’s wrong. Any advice or clue what could be wrong?

Does it start from the edges and head toward the center? If so, it may be low humidity. Maranta plants like higher humidity.

It does! I’m planning on getting a humidifier as soon as I can.

It’s likely that. They tend to be picky about humidity. Also are you using distilled or purified water? Tap water can do that to them as well (depending on what’s in the tap water).

I use bottled water 99% of the time. Occasionally I’ll be lazy and use tap. I’ll be more mindful about this!

The big thing with maranta/Calathea plants is fluoride. So rain water/distilled is key with them. Just something I’ve found out with all the reading I’ve done. Also burned a couple of leaves with it.

I do realize this is rather old, but someone might see it just a mention with the distilled water. You need to be careful because some have vitamins or whatever else it needs to be distilled water and that’s it.

I feel your pain. I’m going through the same thing with this plant and I keep it in my greenhouse with good humidity. I repotted as well. I have a red maranta that is thriving. I might switch to purified water. Wishing you luck!

We have a peacock prayer plant and it’s very picky on humidity.
