I was running an errand today, and the pharmacy (of all places) was selling bonsai—all five were wild coffee plants, and all were in a pitiful state. I bought the two that were closest to giving up, see pic, removed the dead and dying leaves, took them out of the tin pot so they can get some air through the nursery pot. And I watered them—I’m pretty sure they’d been sitting there for a week without any water. Now they’re in a sunny spot and I’m planning to repot them when they’re stronger, but I’m not sure whether to use bonsai potting mix (which would be appropriate for the size) or regular potting soil with extra perlite. Right now they’re sitting in some kind of soil that’s as hard as cement, even after watering. Any advice? 🙏🏼

Polyscias Plants are very dramatic and can quickly take a turn for the worse if they’re exposed to drought, overwatering, or other factors they dislike. If the soil quality is really bad I recommend that your repot it soin. A stiff soil that barely retains any water sounds like one of the main issues with your plant. Repot it, use a soil with extra draining properties, place it in a warm and bright spot and try to increase the humidity around it. 🌿
