Hi! How quickly does the peroxide and water treatment work to get rid of fungus gnats? I got a new snake plant and brought it to work and now my office is full of them! So aggravated.

Uggg... I'm not sure how long it takes but try to bottom water the plant and make sure the top inch or so is not wet. They are in the soil and like moisture. I got rid of gnats by putting old fruit into a plastic cup wrap plastic wrap on the top and put an rubber band around the plastic wrap and cup then get a toothpick and poke small holes in the plastic wrap and put by the plant. When you see that its full of gnats put something on top of the cup so they don't fly back out and make a made dash to the outside garbage. I hope that makes sense. This us an old school way to get rid of them but it worked for me. Sorry this is sooo looong! šŸ˜‚šŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆ

Thank you! Crazy thing is it came as a bottom-watering plant. It’s got the pot it’s in with a wicking string hanging out the bottom and an additional pot to add the water to. I’m gonna start the peroxide mix ASAP but need to get the adults too so they don’t keep repopulating. I also read to put rocks on top of the soil to make it harder for them to reach the soil. This is too much. I just wanted a cute plant in my office now I got a bug infestation. 🤣😫

DONT PUT ROCKS ON TOP. SAVE YOURSELF. I did that with my infested snake plant thinking it would help. All it did was give them hiding spots and protection from the peroxide water and/or pesticides. It also kept them out of site from me so it was harder to gauge how bad it had gotten. Sand will suffocate them a little, and keep the soil drier. If you’re going to do something, mix sand in the top inch of soil. More importantly, add yellow sticky traps, and TOP water with hydrogen peroxide. They lay their eggs in the top inch or two of soil. If you bottom water with peroxide, it won’t reach them. Defeats the purpose. Water less frequently also. Gnats love wet soil. You can water a little less than once a month no problem. Also don’t use the self watering function with the snake plant, they don’t like it. Just keep the bottom part empty for now.

Thank you for the tips. Def not gonna do rocks now. I too watered with peroxide mix today. Getting sticky tape tonight. Fingers crossed they die out. Next step is new potting soil and I’ll add in the sand.

You're going to need a combo of things to get rid of them all of they're starting to infest. Use the yellow sticky traps to capture as many adults before they can breed, plus watering with the peroxide. Unfortunately, you may drown your plant(s) as the reproductive cycle is probably faster than your plant needs water at this point so as an alternative I'd suggest substituting beneficial nemotodes instead of the hydrogen peroxide to take care of the problem. It took me about 2 months of using the sticky traps and nemotodes (they eat the larvae) to get rid of my gnat problem, and I now water with mosquito bits as a preventative in case some of those buggers happen to get in again.

I would repot completely. Toss all old soil and rinse rinse rinse the roots to remove all dirt. You could then try wiping the roots down (gently) with a rag dipped in the peroxide water solution. Then repot. After repotting, wait a few days to see if gnats return, if not, bottom water as it was suggested above as to not overwater the plant. Sit it in a sunny spot so the soil can dry, similarly to how it would in nature.

Thank you! My mom mentioned this just last night to toss out the soil it’s currently in and start over. I got my plant on a whim from Walmart. Next time I’ll know to check it before buying. What a pain in the šŸ‘

repotting will help so much! i also use the zevo plug in traps, and they catch them like crazy! they want nothing to do with the little red fruit fly traps i have!
