Depending on the type of fern reduce the light. Our Peacock Fern loves shade and hates any sort of direct light. I would take out and examine roots. If you find rot, trim leaving only healthy roots. For soil your looks really dark. Switch to a 50/50 potting soil to perlite mix. Do not water right away if you find rot. Skip till next watering. Instead lightly mist daily.
0 gillningarIt looks like my cotton candy fern. I bought two of them 3 weeks ago. One is doing well. The second one is going under. The left one and the one in the middle is the same plant 3 weeks apart. I thought the one doing poorly had too much water or the soil mix dried slower than the other plant bought at the same time. So, I reduced the amount of water I gave it. It just died slower. I moved it to get more indirect light by putting it outside in a covered area. It has stabilized. You just have to try a few things and see how the plant responds. Let it dry out more between watering. Give it more indirect light. Good luck. 🍀🪴
