Meet Yikes, the saddest succulent on earth. I have taken over the care of the office foliage and I suspect Yikes’ biggest issue is a complete lack of drainage in his pot. Repotting a plant at an office job isn’t exactly easy so I’m thinking I might ask my boss to take Yikes home and repot him there, but I don’t have the sunlight for succulents at my house, and he’d therefore be in relatively low light from Thursday until Monday when I bring him back into the office. Any advice? How would you advise repotting a succulent in regular potting mix, since that’s what I have available?

Sorry I have no advice but just wanted to say that that is the cutest name, might have to steal it!

Personally, I'd cut Yikes allll the way back and also plant that crown directly in the soil. (I'd actually just pull the leaves off and just grow those out, and ditch those stems/roots altogether. The bare stem will not grow leaves! 😥) If you must use only potting soil, you'll want to ensure 1) the smallest planter that's reasonable for this plant so it doesn't stay wet. 2) fantastic drainage/porous material like terra cotta. 3) If you can amend it with anything gritty- like steal some gravel from a driveway or something- that can help! Speaking from experience LOL. The low light for a few days won't hurt it any more than it's already hurting. Remember that succulents are sent in the mail without any issues. Good luck!

Can I ask how closely to the crown you would advise trimming the stems? Yikes is coming home with me tonight, I got permission to rescue him Update: I got a terracotta pot, very small, and filled it with a mix of round pebbles and potting soil. The ratio’s about 1.5 pebble to 1 soil.

You'd want to trim that stem pretty darn close, like 1 cm, or as close as you can without hurting the crown. What Drake is saying about propping the leaves is actually a great idea, but if you prefer Yikes to stay as mature as possible, just go ahead and place the crowns on top of the soil and try not to disturb them. If you knock a leaf or two off, let it sit in the air for a few hours so the base dries out, then stick it in the soil too (see if you can get the base in contact with soil while the leaf tip is pointing up a bit) and it'll eventually make a Yikeslet.

A YIKESLET. I love that. Thank you! I have trimmed him accordingly.

Essentially, you want enough stem for it to contact soil without burying any leaves, and if that's no stem at all that will probably work too. I prefer to keep a lil nub of stem because I want to be sure the crown isn't hovering over soil.

Ha, I love the name Yikes so I had to make a diminutive form. I have a fern that's just named "😬" and I don't know how I'll make that into a baby name if I ever divide it... Lol

He’s been repotted! His two crowns were trimmed according to Rhus and Drake’s advice and he was placed in his soil-gravel mix, lightly moistened. I’m letting him chill on my windowsill in the kitchen now. I will share updates as things go!

He’s happily in a new pot! Although he doesn’t seem to have grown any new roots.

The Yikeslets have finally put out roots (after HOW long? Jesus) and hopefully will continue to do well!
