I have a run of the mill Pothos and at some point in time, well over a year ago, these annoying tiny gnats decided to set up shop in the soil of Bradley. I have done everything I can think of and that everyone has suggested. I have used quite a bit of Neem oil on him over this past year. I did a partial “repot”.(just replaced the top few inches with new soil. When more eggs hatched I decided to go all out with a pesticide. It worked. But just for a month or so only for them to return. I decided to fully repot him. Shook as much oil soil off his roots as I could without possibly doing hefty damage. Cleaned the pot out and gave him new lovely soil. About a week ago I am eating a lovely breakfast when I notice the little f******s are yet again back. There are no other plants where he is kept. Just him. I don’t think Pothos can go outside living year round in West Texas. What do I do?

I believe Bonide Systemic will kill gnats. Not the adults but the larvae.

Most potting soil bags, especially miracle grow brandd have dorment gnat eggs in them due to warehouse storage and shipping. The bags have air holes they get in. So when you water the soil after potting the eggs hatch. I use nematode granuals in my soil mixes. You can also use nematode mixes. They have worked well for me. I also keep misquito dunks in my watering cans. Its like a mini treatment each time i water as preventative measures. I also try to bottom water when needed so the top stays dry when they have been an issue.

I second this. I've used sachets of beneficial nemotodes and water with mosquito bits/dunks - great preventative once the gnats are gone. Never needed neem or to repot.

I use an organic insecticide soap when I get new plants. I also use the granules. Have not had a gnat problem since.

try mosquito bits! put them in some stockings and tie it off like a big tea bag. place that in water and let it soak. water bradley with the mosquito bit tea and it should work to kill any eggs or larvae in the soil to prevent the next generation from hatching. combine with neem or even diluted isopropyl alcohol and he should be golden. i’d also recommend you repot him into a fresh dry soil before doing any of this. i wish you and bradley good luck

I battled those nasty things last year and WON! Neem oil did nothing for me…but neem cakes sure did. I soaked them in water to make “neem tea” and watered all my plants with it. Then I used the spent cakes (what was left after the tea was poured off) and mashed it up and mixed it into the top 1/2 inch or so of soil in each infected pot. I also used the lighted sticky bug traps to snag the adults.
