Hi all I think I made a weird mistake and could use some advice….I just took this plant off my shelf that I can only reach using a chair, when I got it down I was very surprised to find about and inch of standing water on top of the soil (I already dumped the water out in the photo). But now I’m confused because this lady was putting on new leaves so I didn’t think anything was wrong and I’m 5’3 so when I stand on my chair to water it I cannot see the very top of this tall pot so I have no idea how long it’s been like this. I guess I just would like to know if I should get it new soil or what since it appears to be ok?? I’m new at this. Any advice is welcome thanks for the help 🥲🙏

I would repot into fresh soil with a chunkier mix. Check the roots to make sure there is no root rot and everything looks healthy. Remove any roots that are brown or mushy. If you can’t add drainage to the pot, id recommend planting into a smaller plastic nursery pot that could fit inside the decorative pot.

Yeah I agree with the others. I would definitely repot and check and make sure there is no rot on the roots. And then make a chunkier mix by adding pumice and orchid bark to the soil.

I had a peace lily that was in a self watering pot, for couple waterings I filled the reservoir AND watered the plant itself because she was always thirsty. Girl grew like CRAZY so didn’t think anything of it until I took her out to split and gift half of it - she smelled like she pooped her pants and was growing fungus! She loves water and not a plant I can let dry out between waterings without her being a drama queen and getting droopy. She didn’t mind that little stint but if I’d let her go too much longer it would have been a big issue. So what I did was shake her roots to remove the icky soil, then gave the foliage and roots a bath to get rid of any last trace of soil. When all clean I could better inspect the roots which were all white/healthy. Then I repotted her in a chunky mix (coco coir, pearlite, orchid bark) and strictly fill only the reservoir now.

This was very interesting thank you for the words of wisdom, I’m glad your plant is doing better now.
