Update on Ellie…. Idk what to do for her. This is the fourth leaf that has turned yellow and now the fifth leaf is turning. I took her out of her pot and her soil was wet so I put her into a dry soil and a new pot, but she’s still losing leaves. Is there something I’m doing wrong or is this normal with plants that have been overwatered? TIA!

Did you check her roots before repotting her? It’s likely that her roots have rotted out and putting her into dry soil was helpful but if you didn’t remove the roots, then the problem is going to keep happening so I would re-check the roots and to use clean of fresh soil, you can also soak in a hydrogen peroxide water mix prior to repotting.

I checked the roots and they looked okay from what I could tell. I also sprayed the roots with a water and peroxide mixture, but I didn’t soak it. Should I take it back out and soak it? This is a picture of its roots before i repotted it. I’m not sure if they look healthy though or if you can even tell? :/

I feel like they look good and you didn’t think any felt mushy. Are the leaves just old/ on the very outside? Is the pot only 1” bigger than the rootball?

Well, The roots were a little long for the pot so they curled a little, but the root ball itself was about 0.5 to 1” smaller than the pot I would say. None of the roots smelled bad or felt mushy from what I could tell.

Are you using tap water? Maybe she’s sensitive to the chlorine?

No, I’ve been using distilled water because I have to use it on some of my other plants anyway. I’ve never had one of these plants though so I’m not sure if I gave her too much water when I first watered her or not. Her soil was dry so I watered her again after getting her 😭

Its very normal for alocasia’s to drop their baby starter leaves once they’ve established larger mature ones. Its also an alocasia thing to grow a leaf, drop a leaf. I don’t see anything wrong at the moment, and don’t think you need to be repotting again. Especially because your roots look fine.

Okay, great! Thank you for the advice! Happy to know it’s normal and I’m not killing it :)

This would be normal for overwatering. You're unfortunately going to continue to see decline till it runs it's course. Just try not to over correct the other direction. Alocasia are extra drama filled.

Thank you, I figured I’ve nearly killed it :(. I just hope it doesn’t lose its big leaves too! 😢

Even if it does, just keep caring for it. I've had a few leafless ones that come back. One even took a few months!

Insufficient light can cause leaves to yellow. Add a single plant grow light within a foot of the plant or give it 8 hours of bright filtered or indirect sunlight every day. 🪴🍀

It should be getting enough light, I think. 🤔 It sits in-front of my sliding glass doors so majority of the time it gets indirect light all day. I open the blinds in the morning and shut them when the sun goes down.

That’s all I could think of that wasn’t mentioned already. Sorry.
