Hello! Hope you're all having a great day! 😁 I am very new to bonsai (relatively experienced with other plants), and I got this cool little dwarf umbrella one for my birthday last month. I believe it's called root over rock (which is new to me!) Please correct me if I'm wrong haha. My question is, what is the best way to water and care for it? I've been watering it from the top of the rock, where I can see the roots are coming from, and letting it sit in the cache tray for a little before draining it - am I doing it right? Please feel free to also send any other tips my way! Thanks so much in advance! 😁🎍

    For root over rock you'll want to get a spray bottle. Spray the roots directly with water daily or every other day, and if needed submerge the entire rock for a 20 minute soak every so often (depending on species it can be weekly, every other week, or once a month.) Yours looks a little dehydrated, so go ahead and give it a soak. Also be careful about salt buildup if you fertilize; the salts will tend to stay on rock in a way that they don't tend to do in soil

      Also if ever you need to "repot" it or adjust it on the rock, you can try putting a bit of sphagnum in under the central root ball; it'd help if you need extra moisture retention

      Thank you so much for the advice! I hadn't watered it for a few days and had just finished watering it when I took the photo, hopefully tomorrow he'll look much better hydrated haha. I water all of my plants with filtered water, so as for fertiliser, will my go-to NPK liquid water additive be fine for this little guy as well? ☺️

      Yeah a balanced mix should be fine. You may need to dilute it. Maybe start at half strength and keep an eye on the plant to see what it prefers
