I'm moving in a few days and I was wondering if any of you had any advice on traveling with a bonsai. I'm mainly worried it'll flat out die in between here and my new place. Are there any best ways to pack it or protect it as it'll be on a long road trip (2 days) also I should mention, it's just under 2 feet tall
Hmm I haven’t packed a plant quite that big before. But my first thought is a tall narrow cardboard box, something with dimension enough to drop the plant into without bending branches. But not much wider than the pot. Before putting the plant in, use stuffing material aka poly-fill to fill in around the trunk and base of the branches. To hold in place, I would use painters tape or masking tape, but make sure it’s not sticking to leaves. Let me see if I can dig up a picture of a plant packed that way Other than that, the plant should be just fine going two days without light or water. What do you anticipate the temperatures to be like in your trip?
좋아요 1개 I apparently didn’t take pictures of my last plant shipment, but this is the general idea. You’ll want a box just barely taller and wider than the plant itself. And then fill in major gaps with soft materials. I’ve had shipments padded with poly-fill, but you can do crumpled up packing/news paper, plastic shopping bags, rags etc

Great suggestions from Mullien. Make sure the substrate is not too dry before packing. For extra security, cover the entire surface of dirt with poly-fil or roughed up newspaper and tape it down in a criss cross manner to keep the substrate/moss in place then bag the base before packing. 좋아요 1개 Thanks for the idea, I’ll start looking for a comparable sized box to fit it in! I also plan on giving it a deep water right before leaving that way it should be okay during travel without any water. Temperatures on the travel days look to be in 18-22 degree Celsius range (64-71 Fahrenheit), so possibly a bit warmer in the vehicle
