Should I repot into a smaller pot? Also, I’ve been watering it frequently and the leaves are falling out? Why is that?

    IMO, that should go into a shallower pot. You want the roots to go wide, not deep. I would try to get something that has more circumference, but shallow.

      As far as the falling leaves, how long have you had the tree? When you first get a ficus, it’s normal to lose a few leaves. Make sure that you’re not overwatering, and have good drainage in the pot. Only water when it’s getting a little dry, giving it a soak until you see water coming out of the drain holes.

    I would wait until the spring to repot and do so in a shallower pot designed specifically for bonsais. Use bits of screen to cover (not block) the drainage holes in the pot. Concerning the leaves falling out, it may be due to overwatering. Do the leaves have black spots on them are they turning yellow? Make use of the plant care schedule on Planta. It’s a nice help in keeping your bonsai happy and healthy.

    Hi Eva, assuming it's in the right amount of sun the over watering could be the issue with your Fukien teas leaf drop. If you have been over watering it for a while I would suggest repotting into fresh soil. If it hasn't been long don't risk the repot. Ease off the watering for awhile until it's healthy enough to go to a smaller pot. I would look for aphids or scale for the leaf drop. One of mine is recovering from the exact same problem. It's coming back but it's a slow process.
